| Help strays |
| Your kind donations mean that Mad Dogs' Trust can continue to change the lives of street animals in Fort Kochi. |
Ever wondered how you can do your little bit for our stray friends? |
Here are a few simple things that might help you - |
1. First of all make sure that the stray is friendly (coz some doggies might be ferocious!). |
2. Feed the dog atleast once a day if not twice. You need not feed the dog expensive food. |
Biscuits, bread, chapatti, milk, rice etc will be more than sufficient. Never feed the dog anything sweet, spicy or salty! Do not feed the dog Glucose biscuits! Feed them Marie biscuits instead.
(Go to this link for more info-

Do give them water to drink after feeding them! Feed the dogs outside your society premises so that no one can take objection. |
| 3. One of the most important thing - get the female dog sterilized as soon as possible! Believe me, it will save you and your canine friend a lot of trouble! All you have to do is to call up your local NGOs like PFA or SPCA and they'll send their vans to pick up the dog. They will sterilize the dog free of cost (do donate if possible) and send the dog back to it's original premises. The best period for sending a dog for sterilization is 2 and half months after the pups are born to 3 and half months. |
| 4. Get the dogs vaccinated yearly. Vaccinations are also carried out by the NGOs. |
| 5. If you find an injured or sick stray, immediately contact your local SPCA. Most Animal Welfare Orgs do not charge anything for treating strays. So you don't have to worry about the money. Saving the life of the animal is more important! |
| 6. Remember that removing strays from their original premises is illegal and punishable by law. Killing or hurting them in any manner is punishable too. If you find any person doing any of the above things, you register a complaint with the SPCA or any animal welfare organization in your city. |
| 7. Put up a collar on your strays. |
| 8. During summer, provide them with plenty of water. If the dog is not drinking water, get it checked immediately. |
| 9. If the dog has cold or cough, you can apply Vicks to it's nose and throat (I've tried this and it works). |
| 10. If your friends or relatives are interested in buying pets, ask them to adopt strays instead. You can find healthy and cute stray animals in your local Animal Shelter. These animals need your love and care. They can also better adjust to the Indian climate than the Pedigree dogs. So always insist on adopting strays! |
11. If you see someone harassing strays you can politely explain to that person that strays are living beings too and like everyone else, have an equal right to live on this earth. Many NGOs working for animals organize seminars for educating people about animal rights and animal welfare. Find out with your local NGO whether they can organize such a seminar at your school, college or respective job site. |
12. Say no to leather products. You can save lakhs of cattle from being culled by doing so.
Remember, Strays Rock!
And you can surely help in your own ways to make their life better! |
